Cubs Signs Power-Hitting First Baseman With Interesting Caveat

According to Mark Feinsand of MLB.com, the Chicago Cubs are still interested in acquiring former Phillies first baseman Rhys Hoskins.

Given how quickly his market is heating up, Hoskins might decide soon. The Cubs and Toronto Blue Jays stand out among the potential suitors.

Feinsand offers a distinct touch while reporting on the interest in Hoskins. Chicago may elect to hold off on making a move on Hoskins until Cody Bellinger decides whether or not to pursue Hoskins given that he is still available.

The right-handed hitter would be a useful addition to a lineup in need of support, but there might not be space for him if Pete Crow-Armstrong plays in every game in 2024.

If Bellinger is healthy again and Crow-Armstrong is in the starting lineup, Bellinger might go to first base. Hoskins would then be without a job.

Hoskins might start at designated hitter, which might be the best position for him while he recovers from his ACL injury. The 30-year-old sustained an injury during last season’s Spring Training.

When healthy, very few free agents can perform as well as Hoskins can. He’s hit at least 27 home runs in every season in which he’s participated in more than 100 games.

Chicago isn’t in the position to add ideal players after losing out on their first targets. Even though Hoskins is far from ideal—especially in light of this injury—the front management is willing to take the chance. Maybe he can recover and show that he was a valuable addition at a lower cost.
