At the age of eleven, Coulthard started karting and quickly became successful. He then moved on to car racing, competing in the British Formula Ford Championship and the Formula 3000 series. In 1994, he made his Formula One driving debut with Williams, following in the footsteps of the late Ayrton Senna. He won his maiden Grand Prix in Portugal the following year, and he joined McLaren for the 1996 campaign. In the 1998 season, he placed third in the World Drivers’ Championship after taking home two race victories in 1997.
