The Winnipeg Jets signed Nino Niederreiter to a three-year, $12 million contract deal on Monday, according to a statement made by general manager Kevin Cheveldayoff. Starting in the 2024–25 season, the contract will have an average annual value (AAV) of $4 million.
Niederreiter is now sixth on the team with 14 points from his 23 games played for the Jets this season, which includes six goals and eight assists.
Niederreiter signed a two-year, $8 million contract extension with the Nashville Predators in July 2022, and he was in the final year of that deal.
The Chur, Switzerland native was originally selected by the New York Islanders with the 10th overall pick in the first round of the 2010 NHL Entry Draft. In 833 games with the Islanders, Minnesota Wild, Carolina Hurricanes, Nashville Predators, and Winnipeg Jets, he has tallied 211 goals and 212 assists for 423 points. Niederreiter has also participated in 87 playoff games, scoring 34 points with 16 goals, 18 assists, and 58 PIMs.
Before moving to North America to play in the Western Hockey League (WHL) with the Portland Winterhawks, Niederreiter played junior hockey in Switzerland. In 120 career games, he scored 130 points (77 goals, 53 assists) while playing for the Winterhawks.
Niederreiter has represented Switzerland internationally on multiple times, with the 2010 World Juniors and the 2014 Winter Olympics serving as highlights. At the 2010 World Juniors, he was selected an all-star for the Swiss team after scoring six goals and racking up ten points in seven games to lead them to fourth place. Niederreiter also participated in the 2016 World Cup of Hockey for Team Europe, where he assisted in six games but lost to Canada in the championship game.
