After suffering back-to-back defeats to the New England Patriots and Arizona Cardinals, two of the worst teams in the NFL, the Pittsburgh Steelers are in dire circumstances.
Fans are angry about the team’s shortcomings and are calling for legendary coach Mike Tomlin to be fired, among other changes. But, George Pickens, the team’s star wide receiver, has provoked criticism and made matters worse with his recent social media posts.
The injury to quarterback Kenny Pickett during the game against the Cardinals appeared to mark the beginning of the Steelers’ impending collapse in 2023. Content creator @patrickwcutler_official, who has over 304,000 followers on social media, posted a comedy skit about Pickett’s injury after the heartbreaking loss to Arizona.
Drawing inspiration from the classic movie “Napoleon Dynamite,” the skit attempted to lightheartedly portray Pickett’s injury sustained during the Cardinals game. The text displayed on the screen said, “point of view, Pickett against the Cardinals,” and it featured a picture of a character that looked a lot like Dynamite who fell back to pass and got hurt.
Although the skit’s motivations aren’t totally obvious, making light of someone’s injury is usually regarded as impolite. But when it was revealed that Pickens had liked the Instagram post, the situation became more heated. It’s important to keep in mind that liking a social media post might not always send the desired message in a larger context.
The purpose of the individual determines the significance of the action. Furthermore, it may not be a big deal for people who are not affiliated with the Steelers organization to find humor in this kind of content. It might encounter some opposition.
