On Monday, the Pittsburgh Pirates made significant progress in meeting their starting rotation needs. The Pirates and reigning World Series champion Martin Perez are getting closer to an agreement, subject to a physical examination, as first reported by FanSided’s Robert Murray.
Furthermore, according to Jason Mackey of the Pittsburgh Gazette, the $8 million agreement will be for a one-year period. a considerable drop from Perez’s $19.6 million contract with the Rangers following his acceptance of a qualifying offer. Given that the overall value is only $8 million, this might be a significant upside gain with a modest risk element.
Perez, a 12-year veteran, has played in Arlington for the previous two seasons with the Texas Rangers. Pitching to a 3.54 ERA over 338 innings worked, Perez appeared in 67 games, including 52 starts, during those two seasons, and produced some of his best work as a pitcher. In addition, he had an ERA+ of 118 and a 3.99 FIP.
In addition, he reported a BB9 of 3.1 and a SO9 of 7.0. Notably, in his 67 games with the Rangers, Perez allowed just 32 home runs, demonstrating his strength at minimising long balls.
With 196.1 innings pitched, a 2.89 ERA, 3.26 FIP, and 138 ERA+, Perez had his finest season to date in 2022. In the process, he was selected an American League All-Star.
As previously mentioned, Perez’s two seasons with the Rangers were his second spell with the team. Additionally, he was a member of the team from 2012 to 2018, playing in 141 games and compiling a 43-49 record, 4.63 ERA, 4.44 FIP, and 761 innings pitched
Prior to playing for the Red Sox for two seasons in 2020 and 2021, he was 10-7 with a 5.12 ERA and 4.66 FIP in 165.1 innings pitched in 2019 for Minnesota. In 48 appearances, including 34 starts, he pitched 176 innings at a 4.65 ERA and 4.84 FIP. With the exception of the 2020 COVID shortened season, Perez has appeared in thirty or more games in five of the six complete seasons since the 2016 season, including each of the last four.
