It’s possible that Jesse Puljujarvi and the Pittsburgh Penguins will require some additional time to work things out.

Eight days ago, Puljujarvi, 25, agreed to a free-agent tryout contract with the Penguins. There is no cutoff date for the tryout, however the player’s expenditures are only covered for the first ten days by the team. The player can then proceed, but at his own cost.

Last summer, the right-winger underwent double hip resurfacing surgery. The same surgeon who operated on Patrick Kane last summer also did the procedure on him. Kane inked a contract with the Detroit Red Wings a few weeks ago.

Sadly, Puljujarvi hasn’t skated since his first practice, which is bad for both the team and the player. Coach Mike Sullivan also hinted that Puljujarvi needs to put in more effort before he’s ready for additional on-ice exercises.

He has been assisting our men in charge of strength and conditioning. He hasn’t been out on the ice in a short while, according to Sullivan. It’s evident that he underwent extensive surgery and is still recovering. We expected it at the time he (signed). Thus, there will be a procedure where he will be on and off the ice, among other things. In that regard, he has been collaborating with our strength and conditioning staff as well as our medical team.

Last season, Puljujarvi played in 75 games, divided between Edmonton (58) and Carolina (17). He scored 16 points (5-11-16). The 2016 fourth-overall selection had a difficult time making a name for himself in Edmonton’s starting lineup and had a trade request on file for a few seasons prior to playing for the team in recent years.
