The Red Sox Are Not Engaged in Any Negotiations with Infielder Alex Bregman

Boston, MA – January 29, 2025

Despite ongoing speculation about the Boston Red Sox potentially pursuing Alex Bregman, sources close to the organization confirm that the team is not currently engaged in any negotiations with the star infielder. While Bregman remains one of the most sought-after free agents on the market, the Red Sox appear content with their existing infield depth and are prioritizing other roster needs as they prepare for the upcoming season.

No Talks Between Red Sox and Bregman

In recent weeks, rumors swirled that Boston was considering an aggressive push to sign Bregman, a two-time All-Star and former World Series champion with the Houston Astros. However, according to multiple reports, those discussions have not materialized.

“The Red Sox have not had any serious discussions with Alex Bregman or his representatives,” said a team insider. “While he’s certainly a talented player, the front office is focused on other areas of improvement rather than making a big-money commitment to a third baseman at this time.”

Bregman, 31, is coming off a solid season with Houston, where he posted a .262 batting average, 22 home runs, and 95 RBIs. His defensive skills at third base remain strong, and his postseason experience makes him an attractive option for teams looking to bolster their infield. However, the Red Sox do not appear to be among them.

Red Sox Infield Depth a Key Factor

One of the primary reasons the Red Sox are not pursuing Bregman is their current infield situation. Rafael Devers is locked in as the team’s third baseman for the foreseeable future, having signed a massive 10-year, $313.5 million contract extension in 2023.

With Devers firmly in place at third, Boston’s focus has been on strengthening other parts of the infield. The team has rising prospects like Marcelo Mayer and Nick Yorke, both of whom are expected to contribute in the coming seasons. Additionally, the Red Sox recently re-signed Jarren Duran and remain interested in developing other young talent rather than investing heavily in a veteran like Bregman.

Another key factor is financial flexibility. After a few seasons of hovering near the luxury tax threshold, the Red Sox are being more strategic with their spending. Committing significant money to Bregman—who is reportedly seeking a deal in the range of six years and $180 million—does not align with Boston’s current financial plans.

Where Will Bregman Land?

With the Red Sox out of the picture, speculation continues about where Bregman might sign. Several teams, including the New York Yankees, Los Angeles Dodgers, and Chicago Cubs, have been linked to the infielder.

The Yankees, in particular, have a need for an impact bat at third base. With Josh Donaldson’s departure, New York is searching for a long-term solution, and Bregman’s power and on-base ability would fit well in their lineup. However, their focus remains on addressing their starting rotation, and it remains to be seen whether they are willing to meet Bregman’s contract demands.

The Dodgers, always in the mix for top-tier free agents, could also be a landing spot. While Los Angeles has emphasized pitching acquisitions this offseason, adding Bregman to an already potent lineup could make them even more dangerous. The Cubs, meanwhile, are rumored to be considering a major infield addition as they continue building a contender in the National League.

Red Sox Priorities Moving Forward

For Boston, the focus remains on improving their pitching staff and addressing depth concerns in the outfield. The team recently moved Garrett Whitlock back to the bullpen, signaling a need for additional starting rotation depth. Free agent options like Jordan Montgomery and Blake Snell have been linked to the Red Sox, though no formal offers have been confirmed.

Additionally, the team is keeping an eye on trade opportunities. With young talent in the farm system, Boston has the flexibility to make moves that could bring in reinforcements without committing to long-term contracts.

Despite some fan disappointment that the Red Sox are not pursuing Bregman, the organization believes that maintaining financial flexibility and focusing on other needs will better position them for long-term success.

Final Thoughts

While Alex Bregman remains one of the biggest names on the free-agent market, the Boston Red Sox are not actively pursuing him. With Rafael Devers firmly established at third base and the team focused on other priorities, a deal with Bregman does not appear to be in the cards.

Instead, the Red Sox will continue exploring ways to strengthen their roster as they aim to return to playoff contention in 2025. With spring training on the horizon, fans can expect more moves from the front office—but a Bregman signing will not be one of them.
