      According to the most recent rumoured candidate for offensive coordinator for the Bears, they are at least thinking about keeping Justin Fields and dealing the first overall pick in a similar fashion to what they did the previous season.

GM Ryan Poles had stated that they would consider all options and make a decision in April. Someone with prior expertise designing an offence for a running quarterback like Fields has been mentioned as their most recent offensive coordinator candidate.

The Bears spoke with Greg Roman, the former offensive coordinator of the Baltimore Ravens, according to a report by NFL Network’s Peter Schrager.

Roman is the latest in a long line of NFL coaches from John Carroll University, a football hotbed in Ohio. He was offensive coordinator for Jim Harbaugh’s 49ers in the 2012 Super Bowl, and in 2019 the Ravens, led by quarterback Lamar Jackson, had the No. 2 NFL offence under Harbaugh.

Out of the five potential offensive coordinators for the Bears, Roman has the most experience. In Baltimore, he was let go during the 2022 season.

Although it would seem that Fields would return if Roman was hired, this is not a given. Caleb Williams of USC is another agile quarterback, although he doesn’t run as often as Fields does.

Roman served as offensive coordinator for the 49ers from 2011 to 14, then as offensive coordinator for Buffalo from 2015 to 2016, and finally as offensive coordinator for the Ravens from 2019 to 22.

In terms of scoring, three of his 49ers’ offences were among the top five. In terms of scoring in 2019 and 2020, the Ravens ranked first. That Buffalo offence was his worst. With Tyrod Taylor at quarterback, the Bills were rated 20th overall by head coach Anthony Lynn.

Jackson finished first in the NFL in 2019 with 36 touchdown passes and a passer rating of 113.3. It was his second season winning the NFL MVP award. That season, he also set a QB rushing record for the NFL with 1,206 yards on the ground and led the league in yards per attempt.

Roman, 51, began his NFL career in 1995 as a strength and conditioning coach with Carolina before moving on to become an offensive line assistant. Before serving as an offensive line assistant for two seasons with the Ravens, he coached the tight ends for the Texans in 2002–03 and the quarterbacks for the team in 2004–05. After serving as Stanford’s associate head coach for two years, he spent three years coaching in high school and college before making a comeback in San Francisco alongside Jim Harbaugh. He also was a tight ends coach for the Ravens two years before becoming offensive coordinator.

The 49ers’ passing game coordinator Klint Kubiak, the Seahawks’ offensive coordinator Shane Waldron, Kentucky’s offensive coordinator Liam Coen, and the quarterbacks coach of the Seahawks, Greg Olson, were the other individuals the Bears are rumoured to have interviewed.goo
