The Yankees were hopeful that Oswald Peraza would become their primary utility option, but with DJ LeMahieu moving full-time to third base, the infield is positioned with a mix of youthful and seasoned quality. Since Peraza is a three-position player, LeMahieu is free to switch to first base in an emergency.
Peraza is still finding his offensive identity, but he has Gold Glove potential defensively. This spring training, the 23-year-old has only participated in one game. He has already struck out twice and hurt his shoulder, which has prevented him from playing for the past three days. The Yankees are holding off on cycling Peraza in their lineup until he can throw across the infield because he is still battling with a pinch.
On the other hand, Jorbet Vivas, a 22-year-old that the Yankees recently acquired from the Los Angeles Dodgers, has produced a lot of quality work.
Vivas has smacked two home runs with four RBIs in four games this spring training, batting.286/.500/1.1433. Vivas can play both second and third base, so it’s not out of the question that if he keeps up his strong performance in spring training, he may unseat Peraza.
Anthony Volpe won the starting shortstop position from Peraza last year, therefore his spring training results have lately determined his future. Vivas will be trying to make the roster in his absence, especially if he keeps showing off his excellent attacking tools, since his most recent injury undoubtedly sets him back.
