The biggest issue hanging over the future of Wolverines football has been answered with Michigan’s announcement of Sherrone Moore as Jim Harbaugh’s replacement. Moore, who previously served as one of a rotating group of interim coaches throughout the 2023 regular season, went 4-0 as acting head coach.
Moore was subsequently named the starting quarterback for the next three games while Harbaugh was suspended by the Big Ten. Moore was previously the offensive coordinator. As offensive line coach, he was instrumental in creating Michigan’s identity for its championship run. Now, after the Wolverines won their first national championship since 1997, their standing is higher than it has ever been. Moore takes over as head coach of Michigan.
Additionally, Moore assumes leadership while the programme continues to be the subject of two NCAA investigations. Dennis Dodd of CBS Sports claims that Harbaugh’s contract discussions with Michigan contained immunity from termination should he be found guilty of serious NCAA infractions, in large part because of these ongoing investigations.
But Harbaugh is no longer with us. As part of Michigan’s self-imposed punishments for the initial inquiry, Moore has already served a one-game ban; nevertheless, as head coach, he may now have to deal with further fines related to that case. Additionally, as the enforcement department tries to find out how many, if any, Michigan coaches were aware of Connor Stalions’s illegal in-person scouting operation, Moore may be the target of the NCAA’s second case, the sign-stealing scandal.
