All eyes are on the Baltimore Orioles to see whether they can actually sign the ace they’ve been searching for this winter as the offseason progresses.
They could be able to find this guy on the trade market if they are unable to spend a significant amount of money on some of the best free agent possibilities.
The Orioles have been connected to Chicago White Sox star Dylan Cease for some time now, but little real progress has been made on the kind of trade package they were allegedly seeking in exchange.
A former CEO has labelled the asking amount as “unreasonable,” and Baltimore has refused to budge on those demands.
More details on the requests the White Sox have made of the Orioles in order to acquire the ace have surfaced.
Bob Nightengale of USA TODAY says, “… while asking the Baltimore Orioles for outfielder Colton Cowser or Heston Kjerstad among their prospects.”
It is not shocking in the slightest.
It was believed that Heston Kjerstad and Colton Cowser would be involved in a possible transaction.
However, it’s important to note that Nightengale used the word “or” rather than “both” when addressing these possibilities.
Although it would be absurd to ship off both in a trade package, Chicago is only interested in one of these guys, so a possible deal would become much more appealing depending on what additional prospects are requested.
Baltimore may be more interested financially now that they are aware that Cease will receive payment under the fair deal in 2024.
If this deal is completed, it will ultimately depend on what the Orioles are willing to give up in exchange for two seasons from a pitcher who finished second in the 2022 Cy Young race.
The Chicago White Sox have made it clear during the winter that they are considering trade offers for starting pitcher Dylan Cease.
In trade talks, the Sox have so far stuck to their demands and seem prepared to hang onto Cease if their price is not satisfied.
Chris Getz, the new general manager, is playing a hazardous but potentially lucrative game. Pitching badly or suffering an injury is a risk the team bears if they keep Cease around for the entire season. They could sell him for the high price they want at the trade deadline if he pitches well.
