Ville Husso’s return to the NHL lineup is something the Detroit Red Wings are hoping will happen soon. Since the team’s game against the Anaheim Ducks in mid-December, the seasoned goalkeeper has missed time due to a lower-body injury.
After a five-week absence, the Detroit Red Wings wanted to give Ville Husso some time to heal and regain his rhythm before bringing him back to the team. On a conditioning loan to the AHL, head coach Derek Lalonde stated that he intended to get him a look-in with the Grand Rapids Gryphons.
He started on Friday night, making the most of his conditioning loan. Husso was moved to Grand Rapids on a two-day loan in order to receive some game experience following his recovery from an injury. In his comeback to the crease, Husso recorded a shutout with 25 saves.
It was his 19th shutout overall and his 12th in the AHL, according to a story from MLive. This occurred during his first stint in the AHL since the 2019–20 campaign. However, Husso needed to go back on the ice and play a game before heading back to Detroit after spending five weeks off the rink.
There are just two games left for the Red Wings before the All-Star break. They’ll play the Ottawa Senators after that, followed by the Vegas Golden Knights. Although Husso may start versus Vegas, no announcement has been made as of this writing.
If not, Husso might return to the crease before the All-Star break to play the Ottawa Senators, but only time will tell. The veteran goalie for the Red Wings has lost a significant amount of time, but his time off the ice may help him adjust.
This follows Alex Lyon’s impressive comeback performance on Thursday, when the Red Wings defeated the Flyers and he recorded a shutout. Thus, Detroit might gain from a Husso and Lyon combination. Husso’s durability has historically been an issue, but after a five-week layoff while he recovered, Detroit might be ready to ride with Husso for a significant portion of the second half.
Husso needs to play well today for the Red Wings. Later on, it can only boost the team’s aspirations of making the playoffs. Even if he has a strong record, he could perform a little better overall for Husso to get back on track.
Husso has participated in 18 games in 2023–24, starting 17 of them. With a 3.53 goals-against average and a.893 save percentage, he has a 9-5-2 record. Although Lyon has been performing admirably for the Red Wings, Husso’s return is a welcome addition to the squad.
