To be competitive in 2024, the New York Mets will need to recruit a couple more players.
Despite great hopes, New York only managed to win 75 games in the previous season. It is now necessary for the Mets to alter organisational procedures. By hiring former Milwaukee Brewers executive David Stearns to serve as the team’s president of baseball operations, New York has already taken a step in this direction.
Although the Mets have already added former All-Stars Joey Wendle and Luis Severino to their roster this offseason, there is still work to be done. According to Zachary Rymer of Bleacher Report, infielder Jake Cronenworth of the San Diego Padres is one player who has been connected to the Mets as a potential trade candidate.
“The Padres tried out Jake Cronenworth as their regular first baseman this year, but to say it didn’t work would be an understatement,” Rymer stated. “His.689 OPS placed him 17th out of 18 players who played at least 100 games in the chilly corner, only behind José Abreu.
“This is nonetheless a two-time All-Star we’re talking about and one who could be easily worth the $80 million he’s owed over the next seven seasons if he goes back to second base…” Both criteria are met by 29-year-old Cronenworth, whose acquisition would allow the Toronto Blue Jays to move breakout rookie Davis Schneider to third base. Although the likelihood of a deal is unknown, acquiring someone like Cronenworth would be a wise addition. Throughout his big league career, the 29-year-old has seen time at first base, second base, and third base. He may be useful everywhere on the field.
Though a move may not be imminent, Mets fans should keep a watch on Cronenworth during the offseason.
