When Marcus Stroman tore his ACL in his left knee last spring, he could not have felt worse, but looking back, the right-hander for the Blue Jays believes it may have been a blessing in disguise.
In addition to making a comeback in September and helping Toronto win the postseason, Stroman returned to Duke University to finish his sociology degree while he was recovering from an injury. Even if the days were long and the work was difficult, it will all be worthwhile when he crosses the stage on Sunday afternoon.
On Sunday, Stroman will be present at Duke’s spring graduation to get his diploma. When Stroman formally completes his studies, as he promised his mother back in 2012, a large number of friends and relatives will be present. To say the least, it’s a realisation of a dream.
It was a long time coming, and I can’t wait,” Stroman remarked. I’m excited to pass that level because there was a lot of work involved and because my entire family and friends are there.
“Although I never thought I would be, I am grateful that I tore my ACL because it allowed me to grow so much as a person. I completed my degree programme and gained both physical and mental strength in the process. My time at Duke University throughout the summer was a major factor in my current fantastic situation.”
When Stroman was chosen by the Blue Jays in the first round of the 2012 MLB Draft, he lacked a few credits towards his degree. He knew he still had some unresolved business when he left the school that spring, but the chance to become a professional was too wonderful to refuse.
At first, Stroman believed that he wouldn’t be able to graduate until after his playing days were done. That wasn’t the best situation for someone who valued his degree so highly, but there wasn’t really a good choice given the demanding schedule of a professional athlete, where the true offseason lasts for around a month before daily exercises start.
