Liam Coen is being considered by the Bears for the position of offensive coordinator.
According to Jonathan Jones of CBS, Coen will speak with the Bears, who fired offensive coordinator Luke Getsy and other offensive assistants this week.
After serving as offensive coordinator for Kentucky in 2021 and 2023, 38-year-old Coen is currently serving in that capacity for a second time. In 2022, he was the offensive coordinator for the Rams in between two stints. Additionally, he served as the Rams’ assistant wide receivers coach in 2018 and 2019 as well as their quarterbacks coach in 2020. There are still many job interviews for young coaches connected to Sean McVay in the NFL.
Hiring an offensive coordinator is currently Bears head coach Matt Eberflus’ top priority. The Bears will soon have to decide whether to keep Justin Fields as their starting quarterback through the 2024 NFL Draft or select a quarterback with the first overall pick. This decision could have a significant impact on the franchise.
Liam Coen, the quarterbacks coach and offensive coordinator for Kentucky, is reportedly considering a comeback to the NFL.
The Chicago Bears will interview Coen for the open offensive coordinator post, according to Jonathan Jones of CBS Sports. Jones has not disclosed the time of the interview.
After joining Kentucky in 2021 as offensive coordinator, he guided the Cats’ offence to their highest-scoring campaign under Mark Stoops, averaging 32.3 points and 425.2 yards per contest. Under Coen’s direction, quarterback Will Levis passed for 2,826 yards and 24 touchdowns and ran for 376 yards and nine scores. This helped him land a spot in the Tennessee Titans’ second round pick in the 2023 NFL Draft. Wan’Dale Robinson broke the school record for single-season receiving yards (1,334) and receptions (104).
Following the respective seasons of both teams, the Rams’ offence under head coach Sean McVay and Coen and Kentucky’s offence under his replacement Rich Scangarello both underperformed in 2022. Coen agreed to return as UK’s offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach. The two reunited after the season.
