The primary question of the Chicago Bears’ next offseason is whether to select a quarterback or not, but adding a seasoned backup via free agency is a possibility regardless of the team’s decision.
According to Bill Barnwell of ESPN, Jacoby Brissett of the Washington Commanders will be a top option for the Bears if they decide to add to their quarterback room this offseason.
“Coach Matt Eberflus was the defensive coordinator with the [Indianapolis] Colts when Jacoby Brissett was thrust into the starting lineup after Andrew Luck’s retirement in 2019,” Barnwell said in a statement. “It’s possible the Bears could add a new backup to either mentor a rookie or provide a higher floor when Fields misses time, but they wouldn’t be in the market for a significant veteran addition to start.”
Brissett has been a journeyman in the NFL for the past eight years, having played for five different clubs. Despite this, the 31-year-old quarterback has started more games than he has been a backup.
Brissett has appeared in 78 games for the New England Patriots, Indianapolis Colts, Miami Dolphins, Cleveland Browns, and Commanders, starting 48 of them. Brissett has completed 61.2% of his 1,587 career throw attempts for 10,474 yards, 50 touchdowns, and 23 interceptions for a lifetime completion percentage of 61.2%. According to Pro Football Reference, he has also carried the ball 229 times for 905 yards and 15 touchdowns.
Following a 4-7 season as the Browns’ starter in 2022, Washington signed Brissett to a one-year, $8 million contract in March.
