In recent years, the Atlanta Braves have declined to provide big salaries to their great players. But it’s reasonable to ask if they’ll give outfielder Ronald Acuna Jr. an exception.
According to David O’Brien of The Athletic, Acuna stated on Friday, “It’s not a secret that I want to be a Brave for life.” Yes, it is my desire. I’m hoping that I can stay here indefinitely, and maybe we can do so soon.”
The 26-year-old won National League MVP last season, making history as the only player in baseball history to have at least 40 home runs and 70 stolen bases. In addition, he led the majors in hits (217), runs (149), and on-base percentage (.416).
It’s not necessary for the Braves to extend him right away. The eight-year, $100 million contract, which includes team options in 2027 and 2028, was inked by the four-time All-Star in 2019.
Estimated payroll for the Braves in 2024 by Spotrac is $221.31 million. If Atlanta’s luxury spending exceeds the $237 million luxury tax in 2024, it would likely be required to pay a significant tax.
However, Acuna Jr. most likely desires a raise. Over the following three seasons, his base pay will be $17 million. According to Spotrac, he is worth a 10-year contract costing $38.4 million a year, which is the second-highest of all outfielders and the fifth-highest in the league.
When their contracts expired, the Braves let previous stars Dansby Swanson and Freddie Freeman depart, but Atlanta would be foolish to do the same with Acuna Jr., who is a superior talent.
