Red Sox and Cubs are reportedly interested in former Astros reliever……..

he Boston Red Sox and Chicago Cubs could both use some help in their bullpen. Luckily for both teams, a former Houston Astros reliever remains available on the free agent market.

According to BobLuckily of USA Today, right-handed reliever Ryne Stanek has drawn interest from the Red Sox and Cubs. It’s unclear if a contract between the two teams or an outside franchise is close to being finalised.

Stanek has been a member of the Astros bullpen since 2021. He has a 2.90 lifetime ERA, a 196/89 K/BB ratio across 186 games, and a 2022 World Series victory with the franchise. In his seven-year MLB career, Stanek has amassed a 406/175 K/BB ratio and a 3.45 ERA.

Kenley Jansen was added by the Red Sox in 2023 to bolster their bullpen’s back end. Despite this, their 4.32 ERA placed them 20th in the league. Barring a deal, adding some depth in front of Jansen might help Boston stabilise the latter innings.

Chicago’s bullpen did slightly better, coming in at 13th with a 3.85 ERA. Adbert Alzolay, the new closer, took the pitch by storm. To overcome their postseason rut, the Cubs, like the Red Sox, still want some additional vigour in the bullpen.

Despite Josh Hader being out of the picture, Ryne Stanek may not be the most intriguing reliever on the field. But he is a seasoned veteran who understands the requirements for a World Series victory. Both the Red Sox and the Cubs are keeping a close eye on Stanek as they attempt to make a deep run in the playoffs.
