Penei Sewell was signed to a large contract extension by the Detroit Lions, securing his services for the near future.
Since being selected by the Lions with the seventh overall pick in 2021, the Oregon product has lived up to their expectations. He has made two trips to the Pro Bowl in three NFL seasons, and in 2023 he was named to the first team of All-Pros.
The Lions chose to swiftly sign him to an extension as a result. By selecting his fifth-year option, which becomes effective in 2025, the team also added an extra year to the agreement.
Officially, the extension is for four years, with an additional $112 million for the last year of his rookie contract and a five-year option. This implies that for the next six seasons, the Lions will have him under team control.
Sewell becomes the highest-paid player at the position, and the deal also resets the market for NFL offensive linemen.
