When healthy, the Detroit Lions’ offensive linner Penei Sewell is now among the best in the league in 2023.
As a result of their achievements, two players, Frank Ragnow and Penei Sewell, were named to the Pro Bowl and All-Pro team. There were five dependable starters on the team, which helped create an outstanding run game.
With young players on the team, offensive line coach Hank Fraley’s squad was among the league’s top statistically, and more success is likely to come.
But the position group is left with a lot of doubts regarding free agency. In the offseason leading up to the 2024 season, here is where the Lions stand on the offensive line.
Penei Sewell, a right tackle for the Lions who was drafted in the top 10 and then some, is the best in the league. He joined the team in 2021. With a 92.1 offensive grade overall, Pro Football Focus ranked him as the best tackle.
Throughout 20 games—including the postseason—Sewell gave up just one sack and 25 total pressures. He regularly made large blocks in the open field, showcasing exceptional athleticism for his position.
For his efforts, the third-year lineman was selected for the Pro Bowl and made to the first team of All-Pros.
Taylor Decker, his colleague at tackle, had another successful season shielding Jared Goff’s blindside.
Frank Ragnow managed to play in 15 games despite suffering many injuries. Along with back, knee, and ankle issues, he has struggled with a persistent toe injury since 2021.
Specifically, he only missed one game after the team’s Week 13 victory over New Orleans due to a meniscus injury that necessitated surgery.
