Adebayo “is expected to receive a lucrative extension from the organization this offseason to keep him in Miami for years to come as a foundational piece for the Heat who is still a few years away from turning 30,” Chiang wrote.
Despite the fact that there has been a lot of discussion about the Miami Heat and the possibility of offering players contract extensions, most of the attention has been focused on star Jimmy Butler and the commotion surrounding his situation.
However, Heat star Bam Adebayo is also eligible for one and may receive one this summer. Anthony Chiang of The Miami Herald reported that the team plans to offer the big man a “lucrative extension,” which guarantees that he will remain a “foundational piece” for the Heat for the foreseeable future.
His contract situation is a little unusual because, although one of the two choices has already been ruled out, the extension may be significant based on NBA offseason honors. Adebayo had to win Defensive Player of the Year, a title he was a finalist for but lost to Minnesota Timberwolves player Rudy Gobert, in order to be eligible for a supermax contract for $245 million for four years.
Another option is to select an All-NBA squad, which is still up for debate because, despite Adebayo’s extraordinary talent, there are other outstanding players in the league. Should the celebrity fail to make it, he will remain qualified for.
With his exceptional ability to guard every position on the court and his advanced statistics showing his opponent’s field goal %, Adebayo remains one of the league’s greatest defensive players, if not the best. Additionally, as the season has gone on, his offense has become better as he has established himself as a post player, improved his mid-range game, and even sowed the seeds this year by demonstrating that he can add three-point shooting to his already extensive toolkit.
