Hernandez will be making his season debut on the active roster with this appearance.
In 2023, Hernandez made his major league debut, playing in four games before missing the most of the campaign due to a forearm strain. After making a comeback towards the conclusion of the season, he made an impression during postseason training and was added to the Division Series squad.
This season, Hernandez has thrown well for Gwinnett, making 12 appearances and recording a 1.65 ERA and 3.58 FIP in 16 1⁄3 innings. In those 16 1⁄3 innings, he has struck out 22 batters while walking nine others.
If necessary, Hernandez can pitch numerous innings. After Bryce Elder was knocked out early in Sunday’s game, Ray Kerr pitched 3 1/3 innings out of the bullpen.
As a result of Saturday’s rainout, the Atlanta Braves will play a split doubleheader on Monday to finish their four-game series against the San Diego Padres. Reynaldo López will take on Dylan Cease in Game 1, and Chris Sale will take on Randy Vasquez in the nightcap.
The Braves lost the first two games of the series in a dismal manner, and they have now lost three straight overall, dropping them five games behind the Philadelphia Phillies in the NL East standings. In Game 1, Dylan Cease, a right-hander, will be the Padres’ counterpuncher. Throughout the offseason, there were whispers of a trade involving Cease, who was eventually dealt to San Diego. With nine starts under his belt, he has established a 2.45 ERA and a 2.37 FIP, fitting comfortably at the top of the Padres’ rotation. Over 5 2⁄3, he struck out eight and gave up three runs.
In the second game, Sale will start for Atlanta and hopes to build on a run of strong performances. During his most recent start against the Cubs, Sale was dominant, giving up just two hits and striking out nine in seven scoreless innings. In his last four games, he has struck out 34 batters and only given up two walks. He has struck out at least nine batters in three of his past outings.
Randy Vásquez is now scheduled to start Monday’s nightcap for the Padres, instead of Joe Musgrove, who was initially supposed to start one of the series games. Having just pitched 15 2⁄3 innings this season, Vasquez has a 6.32 ERA and a 5.19 FIP after four bad outings.
