This season, Joe Flacco unexpectedly guided the Cleveland Browns to the postseason after taking over as the starting quarterback in December, making him a folk hero in the state of Ohio.
However, Flacco won’t get a chance to start 2024 as the Browns’ starting signal-caller because Deshaun Watson will likely return from injury the following season. This could have an impact on Flacco’s free agency choice.
The 36-year-old appears willing to take on a reserve role, but it’s also obvious that he wants to make sure he walks into a position where he can play.
On the Ultimate Cleveland Sports Show, Flacco stated, “One backup job may be different than another backup job.” There are times when I’ll feel at ease filling that position somewhat. Of course, I do want to play some games, but. I think I’m capable of that.
Although Flacco enjoyed his time with the Browns, it appears that he may be looking for a better opportunity as he stated last month that quarterback would consider returning to Cleveland but that he did not want to rush anything.
Flacco completed 60.3% of his throws for 1,616 yards, 13 touchdowns, and eight interceptions in five games with the Browns last season. He also had a passer rating of 90.2. Most significantly, Cleveland advanced to the playoffs and finished 4-1 in those games.
Nevertheless, Flacco had a disastrous playoffs, tossing two pick-sixes in a 45-14 loss to the Houston Texans in the Wild Card Round.
Without a doubt, Joe Flacco is an excellent backup, and at this point in his career, that may be the job he has to settle for this summer.
