In the midst of all the excitement surrounding their 12-5 record and NFC East championship, the Dallas Cowboys failed once more in crucial situations. They were defeated 48–32 by the Green Bay Packers in the NFL playoffs’ opening round, and for a team that was expected to have one of the league’s most formidable defenses, giving up 48 points to an offense led by Jordan Love wasn’t exactly how they thought their season would finish.
In order to support newly appointed defensive coordinator Mike Zimmer, the Cowboys are hoping to strengthen their performance on the defensive end of the ball by adding new players. In order to achieve this, Nicki Jhabvala of the Washington Post reports that the Cowboys are employing Jeff Zgonina, a former defensive line coach with the Washington Commanders, to the same role.
Zgonina is a seasoned coach with a resume that includes stops with the Houston Texans, New York Giants, and San Francisco 49ers. It seems reasonable to steal a head coach from the Commanders, particularly since former Cowboys defensive coordinator Dan Quinn left the team for the Washington head coaching position.
On Friday, the Cowboys were able to complete their roster by adding a few key personnel to complete Mike Zimmer’s staff. Apart from hiring Jeff Zgonina as the new defensive line coach, the Cowboys also hired Paul Guenther, who Zimmer has worked with extensively, as the team’s new run game coordinator. This is the first time the Cowboys have had a coordinator.
