Lions Expect Jared Goff Extension This Offseason

The Detroit Lions, a team that has usually spent its existence near the basement of the NFL, are riding high after putting on one of their best single-season performances in franchise history.

Jared Goff’s performance as the starting quarterback for the Lions last season was a major factor in their victory. Goff was a reliable quarterback for Detroit in 2023 after putting up a showing in 2022 that earned him his third Pro Bowl selection. In 2023, he completed 67.3 percent of his passes for 4,575 yards, 30 touchdowns, and just 12 interceptions.

Goff was acquired by the Lions in the 2021 trade that sent Matthew Stafford to the Los Angeles Rams, but he had a difficult debut season in Detroit. However, he has thrown for at least 4,400 yards and 29 touchdowns in each of the previous two seasons, and he has begun to resemble the quarterback who was selected first overall in 2016.

It follows that it is not surprising that he and the Lions have been discussing a potential extension, given that his contract is slated to expire following the upcoming season. For some, it may seem obvious to extend Goff’s deal, but Detroit’s decision to do so could actually keep the team from realizing its full potential.
