Earlier today Dak Prescott Shockingly Gets Suspended For Allegedly Involving In Breer claims that if Lance can develop into a Taylor-like talent, he could replace an injured player, and it would be a “huge win.”
Just prior to the start of the previous season, the Dallas Cowboys acquired quarterback Trey Lance, adding intriguing depth behind Dak Prescott.
Of course, Lance’s life wasn’t meant to unfold this way. He was never meant to be a “depth” type of man.
Lance was originally chosen by the San Francisco 49ers with the third overall choice of the 2021 NFL Draft. Lance played collegiate football at North Dakota State.
You know, the draft class that has produced a number of unsuccessful quarterbacks thus far.
In Year 1, Lance was seated behind Jimmy Garoppolo. He made six appearances, including a few starts, and threw for 603 yards, five touchdowns, and two interceptions. Additionally, he completed 57.7 percent of his passes and had a 97.3 passer rating.
Lance was then designated the starter going into his sophomore season, although he was sidelined for the whole season due to an ankle injury that happened in Week 2. Additionally, it ended his prospects of being the 49ers’ starting quarterback because Brock Purdy was subsequently forced into that season’s starting lineup.
Lance was transferred by the Niners to the Cowboys in August of last year, as it was clear that his future in San Francisco was not very bright.
In response to a mailbag query regarding Lance’s status, Albert Breer of Sports Illustrated stated that although Lance might be a suitable backup for Prescott, he is probably not the answer if Prescott leaves in free agency in March of next year. Not at this moment, anyhow.
Breer then gave Lance a really interesting analogy: Tyrod Taylor.
Taylor has mostly played backup in the NFL, although he has had a decent career overall. Although Taylor was the Buffalo Bills primary signal-caller for three straight seasons and made the Pro Bowl as a starter in 2015, it’s clear that his best position is as an exceptional QB2.
