This winter, the Los Angeles Dodgers signed Shohei Ohtani, Yoshinobu Yamamto, and Tyler Glasnow, three of the Chicago Cubs’ top targets.
It’s annoying and makes one wonder how a club like the Dodgers can win it all, but that’s the current state of sports in America.
If the Cubs want to win the National League Central and have a serious postseason push, they need to change course and make some big additions rather than pouting about it.
In a recent piece, The Athletic speculated that Chicago would attempt to acquire Cleveland Guardians star Shane Bieber through trade. It has been claimed that Justin Bieber is a target for trade, which makes some sense given his cost and team control over someone like Blake Snell.
The Guardians would need to do a lot to convince Bieber, who has consistently shown flashes of greatness and has been a perennial Cy Young candidate. Fortunately, the Cubs have an abundance of prospect money to complete such a transaction.
The fact that the Guardians are in a different conference and not merely a different division helps the Cubs as well. The fact that Bieber won’t be facing them in a postseason race may allay the Guardians’ concerns about trading him.
The hiring of Craig Counsell by Chicago was, as the story notes, the first major splash of the winter, but they need something to support their record-deal signing of the best manager available.
