September marked the end of Balkovec’s second season as Class A Tampa’s manager. She became the first female manager of a Major League Baseball affiliate when she made her debut with the team in April 2022 and won.
Prior to that, Balkovec held the distinction of being the first female minor league strength and conditioning coach and the first female hitting coach in the Yankees’ minor league system.Formerly a softball catcher for Creighton and New Mexico, Balkovec began her professional baseball career in 2012 as a minor league strength and conditioning instructor for the St. Louis Cardinals.
Balkovec was signed by the Houston Astros in 2016 as their Latin American strength and conditioning coordinator. He later moved up to Double-A Corpus Christi to serve as their strength and conditioning coach.
In 2019, she became a minor league hitting instructor for the Yankees.
Since the conclusion of the 2023 season, the Marlins have made a number of front office changes.The Marlins appointed former Rays general manager Peter Bendix as their new president of baseball operations one month after firing general manager Kim Ng, who had overseen the team for three seasons. The first female general manager of a major league team was Ng.
