Michigan coach Jim Harbaugh is slated to speak with the Los Angeles Chargers this week considering their coaching vacancy barely a week after leading the Wolverines to a national championship, according to the Associated Press.
Harbaugh regularly sidestepped enquiries regarding reports that he would rejoin the NFL, and more especially, the Chargers, in the weeks preceding the championship game versus Washington.
From 2011 to 2014, Harbaugh was the head coach of the San Francisco 49ers. After the 2012 season, he guided the team to the Super Bowl, where they were ultimately defeated by the Baltimore Ravens. The 60-year-old Harbaugh is also well-connected to both the Chargers and the team’s owners, the Spanos family. Before quitting the team in 2001, he participated in two seasons of play.
After finishing the season with a 5–12 record, the team fired general manager Tom Telesco and coach Brandon Staley on December 15. Harbaugh has an 89-25 record at Michigan during the previous nine seasons.
It’s about to get hot in the NFL teams’ Jim Harbaugh derby.
According to ESPN and several sources, the Los Angeles Chargers will be the first NFL team to interview with Harbaugh regarding their head coaching position.
There are vacancies in Atlanta, Carolina, Las Vegas, Seattle, Tennessee, and Washington.
The Chargers and the Spanos family, who own the franchise, are familiar with Harbaugh, who was an NFL coach in the past. Prior to retirement during the 2001 season, he was a member of the Bolts in 1999 and 2000.
The Chargers are searching for a new general manager and coach after firing Tom Telesco and Brandon Staley on December 15, the day following a 63-21 loss to the Raiders in Las Vegas.
During an availability at Disneyland before to the Rose Bowl on December 27, Harbaugh was asked about potential interest in the NFL and then the Chargers. He responded to both enquiries with the same response.
Such a narrow-minded person. That is our approach to the situation. We literally go to bed tonight and wake up tomorrow to see if we can’t dominate the day we’re in, look to make the most of it, control the day,” he said. It’s a group with a single goal. Just concentrated on getting things done today and seeing whether we can continue tomorrow.”
