Jeremy Swayman’s $3.4 million salary limit burden for another season is no longer an option for the Bruins; instead, they will need to give their next top goalkeeper a substantial price increase and longer contract. In the 2024 Stanley Cup Playoffs, Swayman finished 6-6 with a 2.15 GAA and a.933 save percentage, solidifying his position as the team’s best option in goal. The 25-year-old, 6-foot-3, 195-pound goalie had an outstanding regular season, going 25-10-8 with a 2.53 GAA and a.916 save percentage. Swayman will now be subject to arbitration as a restricted free agent.
The Boston Bruins have not commented on extending Swayman on a long-term deal with a significant pay raise, per team policy not to discuss contract negotiations with the media. However, Swayman, just as he has done on the ice, continues to say all the right things off of it. “I’d say 6×6,” one NHL executive source told Boston Hockey Now on Monday morning. He’s earned it, and he’s arguably the best American goalie and an elite goalie in the NHL now.
When asked on Sunday if he thought he would be playing for the Bruins the following season, Swayman said, “I am.” I’m excited to see my agent and management work out the specifics this summer because I have no doubt they will. To me, it is everything. How much I care about this club, this organization, and this city is evident. There is no other way that I would want it to be.
Regarding his obtaining a contract extension with the Bruins, Swayman has consistently maintained his optimistic demeanor with the media. However, he also made it clear early in the season that he didn’t particularly appreciate going to arbitration.
Swayman said, “That’s really special,” in response to a question concerning his selection for the NHL All-Star game in January. “First and foremost, without the team in front of me, it would not have been possible.” Great credit to them for letting it happen, but it seems really unique to be in this position given what I went through with arbitration last summer and hearing things that a player should never hear. I’m thrilled to be joining “Pasta” [David Pastrnak] and “Monty” [Jim Montgomery]. I feel incredibly honored.
Swayman has undoubtedly exceeded the Bruins’ expectations this past season, so it is now up to them to give him the credit he deserves. In order to accomplish this, they will probably move Linus Ullmark, Swayman’s hugging partner, even if the Vezina Trophy winner from 2023 want to stay, as the Bruins have no business keeping more than $11 million in cash on hand. Don Sweeney, general manager of the Boston Bruins, needs to sort it out before giving Swayman the money!
