Georgia’s defensive line has to find players who can make plays………
One of the best defensive coordinators in football is Kirby Smart. Georgia fields one of the best defences in the country, loaded with future NFL talent, year after year. Even during his time at Alabama, Smart’s defences had a certain flair. Each iteration of the defence Smart puts on the field will appear slightly different due to the ephemeral nature of college football, but the general idea is always the same: two deep safeties, three down linemen and a handful of burners at inside linebacker. However, his team really excels when he has a game-changing player on the defensive line.
When Smart was Alabama’s defensive coordinator, Jonathan Allen, Jarran Reed, and A’Shawn Robinson were the main players on defences that won national championships. After Georgia won its first national championship in forty years under the direction of Jordan Davis, Devonte Wyatt, and Travon Walker, Jalen Carter helped the team win two more in a row. A true threat on defence is the reason for each of Smart’s victories. Someone who shifts the manner an offence is executed by taking up several blocks. That was the one area where Georgia’s defence fell short last season. Although many of the players from Georgia’s defensive line from the previous season will play in the NFL, none of them demonstrated the ability to take control of a game. Christen Miller was the top Georgian.
In contrast, Jalen Carter had 8.5 as a backup in 2021. From the nose tackle position, Jordan Davis finished with 5.0, and Travon Walker and Devonte Wyatt contributed 7.5 and 7.0, respectively. Kirby Smart has advocated wreaking “havoc” on the offences of the opposition. That begins from the front. In 2024, the Bulldogs will encounter numerous top-tier offences; therefore, they will require a defensive standout to disrupt games.
