It will become increasingly important for the Chicago Cubs to sign some big players this winter as January approaches. The Cubs spending freely at this point is unexpected, and I wouldn’t expect them to do much more than maybe make it past the first luxury tax tier. In order to create a competitive club in 2024, the Cubs need to sign a productive player to a shorter, less expensive contract. These three players are excellent buy-low options who should be able to recover and provide their club a boost in the upcoming season.
Three buy-low prospects: 3. Lucas Giolito
Pitcher Lucas Giolito may have looked terrible in the past two of seasons, but there’s more to consider than meets the eye. He has a 4.89 ERA over the last two seasons, but here’s the thing: His 4.90 ERA in 2022 was matched by a 4.07 FIP, indicating that the Chicago White Sox’s unlucky streak and shaky defence were major contributors to his struggles. He had a 3.45 ERA in the first half of 2023 and a horrible 7.13 in the second half.
2 of the 3 buy-low contenders is James Paxton.
James Paxton is another intriguing option this winter, considering his strong career numbers. His ERA was 4.50 in 2023 following his recovery from Tommy John surgery. Paxton has struggled with injuries in recent years, pitching just 21.2 innings between 2020 and 2021, but when fit, his effectiveness is undeniable. Paxton’s 3.69 ERA during a ten-year career is quite respectable.
Three candidates to purchase low: 1. Justin Turner
If the Cubs somehow lose out on Rhys Hoskins and Cody Bellinger, Justin Turner is a tempting backup choice. Turner will test the market to see if he can once again land a two-year contract or if he can get a one-year contract for more money than he made in Bean Town after declining his option with Boston and becoming a free agent.
