Detroit Lions ‘GOAT’ Barry Sanders Sadly Kicks The Bucket @56 Although past performance indicates that cornerbacks have an unfair advantage when it comes to winning the award, Arnold has all the makings to defy the odds in 2024.
The Detroit Lions took no chances while selecting cornerback Terrion Arnold in the 2024 NFL Draft. General manager Brad Holmes made the decision to trade up and acquire his man after the Alabama product fell into the 20s in the opening round.
In his rookie season, it is hoped that Arnold will be ready to start opposite Carlton Davis and give Detroit’s pass defense the push it needs to make another long postseason run.
Arnold still has a good chance to earn Defensive Rookie of the Year, as ESPN’s Mike Clay predicts he will as he is anticipated to play a lot on the field in 2024.
After recording a league-high 20 passes defensed and two picks in his first season, New York Jets 2022 first-round selection Sauce Gardner was the latest cornerback to win the honor. In addition, Gardner gave up a passer rating of 62.7 and a completion percentage of just 53.5%.
That helps you understand what Arnold needs to accomplish to win an award that players in the front seven usually win most of the time. Only four cornerbacks have taken home the trophy in the previous 30 years, and three of those four victories have occurred in the previous ten years.
