If the Chicago Cubs want to recover their offseason, they must begin making bold decisions that have an immediate impact on their roster.
One of the most effective ways they may accomplish this is by acquiring a top-tier starting pitcher.
They’ve been linked to a couple free agent names as well as those who have become available on the trade market. Tyler Glasnow was the most notable, eventually being acquired by the Los Angeles Dodgers.
The Cubs appeared to be prepared to spend big money this offseason, but there’s some suspicion that they won’t be willing to provide big contracts to free agents.
With a good pipeline, they may be able to add an outstanding starter through a trade.
One possibility is that the Houston Astros are apparently considering calls on star ace Framber Valdez due to concerns about their own financial condition.
According to Ryan Bunton of Chowder & Champions, the front office in Chicago is interested.
“Boston’s AL East foe Baltimore Orioles, as well as the Chicago Cubs are also expected to be in contention for Valdez,” according to the article.
The Astros would be searching for premier prospects in exchange for rebuilding their farm system, something the Cubs might provide. Furthermore, Valdez’s contract for the 2024 season is only about $12 million, which may persuade Chicago to make an offer.
Unlike Glasnow, Valdez has another year of team control and does not have the injury history that the Tampa Bay Rays’ ace has.
Finally, if the Cubs believe this would help them jump into contention, they will have to spend some money to complete this transaction.
Are they willing to go through with it?
The only way to know is to wait and see.
