After suffering numerous injuries over the previous few seasons, a former Chicago Cubs pitcher has drawn interest from the Boston Red Sox.

The Red Sox are reportedly interested in relievers Jakob Junis and former Cubs pitcher Codi Heuer, according to Mass Live.

Heuer was declared non-tendered by the Cubs in November following an injury that kept him out of the game for the majority of the previous two seasons.

That began with the Tommy John surgery he had early in 2022, which kept him sidelined for the whole 2022 campaign.

The Cubs sent him back to Triple-A Iowa to begin a rehab assignment in May of the previous season. With a 7.82 ERA in 15 games pitched, he was 0-1 for Iowa.

However, a summertime elbow fracture put a stop to his season. Shortly after the diagnosis, he underwent surgery, and he was sidelined for the remainder of the Iowa season.

Heuer’s elbow fracture during a game of pitching garnered attention as the cause of his ailment. He struck the hitter with a pitch that was well above his head and leapt off the mound, clutching his injured arm.

Heuer played in the Major Leagues with the Chicago White Sox and the Cubs in 2020 and 2021 prior to the injuries. He had a 10-4 record, a 3.56 ERA, and two saves in 86 games. While he walked more than three batters every nine innings, he struck out eight hitters per nine innings.

As part of the 2021 trade that sent reliever Craig Kimbrel to the White Sox in exchange for Heuer and Nick Madrigal, the former White Sox sixth-round pick ended up with the Cubs.

Recently, Jed Hoyer has been really busy. With Hector Neris and possibly Carl Edwards Jr. (who I’ve long loved but is on a minor-league deal), the bullpen looks a lot better. To be eligible for Spring Training, he must earn a slot. Obviously, I would still prefer a terrific lefty like Cody Bellinger, but things are starting to look up.

Mark Martinez (Marquee Sports Network*): A member of the Cubs’ 2016 championship club is returning. “Reliever Carl Edwards Jr. has accepted a minor-league contract with the team and has been invited to Spring Training.” More is available from Evan Altman.
Ryan Taylor (NBC Sports Chicago*): Given the Angels’ renewed interest, the Cubs’ chances of signing Cody Bellinger are in jeopardy. “Recall that the Angels’ main offseason ruse involved re-signing Shohei Ohtani, their star two-way player.”

Evan Altman (Cubs Insider*): According to MLB Pipeline’s most recent rankings, the Cubs have seven of the top 73 prospects. “It’s kind of cool to have the most prospects in the top 100 for the first time in ten years.” Here’s more from Manny Randhawa. Adds North Side Bound.
Cubs pitching prospect Brett Taylor (Bleacher Nation*) was suspended following a positive PED test. “Mathew Peters, the team’s 2022 12th round selection, tested positive for dehydrochlormethyltestosterone and was suspended for the Arizona Complex League season.” ESPN offers additional. He was trolled by fans, claims Sportskeeda.
Jake Misener (Cubbies Crib*): This is the most magnificent spring training hat in Cubs history that has leaked. If the team’s rumoured Cactus League hat for 2024 is any indication, fans’ requests for more powder blue appear to have been heeded.
