After suffering numerous injuries over the previous few seasons, a former Chicago Cubs pitcher has drawn interest from the Boston Red Sox.
The Red Sox are reportedly interested in relievers Jakob Junis and former Cubs pitcher Codi Heuer, according to Mass Live.
Heuer was declared non-tendered by the Cubs in November following an injury that kept him out of the game for the majority of the previous two seasons.
That began with the Tommy John surgery he had early in 2022, which kept him sidelined for the whole 2022 campaign.
The Cubs sent him back to Triple-A Iowa to begin a rehab assignment in May of the previous season. With a 7.82 ERA in 15 games pitched, he was 0-1 for Iowa.
However, a summertime elbow fracture put a stop to his season. Shortly after the diagnosis, he underwent surgery, and he was sidelined for the remainder of the Iowa season.
Heuer’s elbow fracture during a game of pitching garnered attention as the cause of his ailment. He struck the hitter with a pitch that was well above his head and leapt off the mound, clutching his injured arm.
Heuer played in the Major Leagues with the Chicago White Sox and the Cubs in 2020 and 2021 prior to the injuries. He had a 10-4 record, a 3.56 ERA, and two saves in 86 games. While he walked more than three batters every nine innings, he struck out eight hitters per nine innings.
As part of the 2021 trade that sent reliever Craig Kimbrel to the White Sox in exchange for Heuer and Nick Madrigal, the former White Sox sixth-round pick ended up with the Cubs.
