Tyler Glasnow will most likely be traded by the Tampa Bay Rays this offseason.
because after the conclusion of the 2024 season, Glasnow, who is due to make $25 million, will be a free agent. The Rays deal away veteran talents right before they become free agents in order to refill their farm system.
Before 2023, Glasnow missed a good deal of time due to a variety of ailments, including Tommy John surgery in 2021. After recovering from it, he had two strong starts at the end of 2022. Despite missing time in 2023 due to an oblique injury, he had a solid season in 2023, finishing with a 3.53 ERA and 1.083 WHIP in 21 starts, good for 2.0 bWAR. If he’s fully healthy, that’s probably a season worth three wins.
For the Rays, he has appeared in four postseason games, although his 5.72 ERA in ten starts has not been especially impressive. His lifetime strikeout rate (11.5 per nine innings) and walk rate (3.6 per nine innings) are both respectable during the regular season, and they were both better in 2023 (12.2 and 2.8, respectively).
The Cubs would only be guaranteed one year of Glasnow’s services by trading for him, and he is thirty. At that point, would it make sense to sign him to a three- or four-year extension?
