On Friday, Rowdy Tellez and the Pirates finalised a $3.2 million, one-year contract. In exchange for minor league outfielder Deivis Nadal, Pittsburgh also acquired outfielder Edward Olivares from the Kansas City Royals.
As part of the agreement, Tellez, a first baseman and designated hitter, is eligible to get $800,000 in performance bonuses. Last season, Olivares, 27, hit.263 with 12 home runs and 36 RBIs. In portions of four seasons with the Royals and San Diego (2020), he has a.261 average, 24 home runs, and 73 RBIs.
During the previous season, Nadal, 21, played 101 games for Class A Bradenton and hit.212 with eight home runs, 39 RBIs, and 33 stolen bases.
For Milwaukee in 2023, Tellez, 28, batted.215 with 13 home runs and 47 RBIs. The left-handed hitter has spent six seasons with Toronto and Milwaukee, where he is a career.233 hitter.
The Pirates selected Roddery Muñoz, a right-hander, for assignment.
The Pirates needed first base support coming into the offseason. Carlos Santana held the role from the start of 2022 until being sent to Milwaukee during the trade deadline. During the last two months of the season, among others, Connor Joe and Jared Triolo received play at first.
The 21-foot-tall Clemente Wall at PNC Park in right field should appeal to Tellez. He is a professional.a 277 hitter in 21 games at the ballpark with five home runs and twenty RBIs.
The Pirates host the Miami Marlins for their first regular-season series starting on March 28, 2024, after opening Spring Training in February. April 5, 2024, marks the start of the Pirates’ inaugural home series against the Baltimore Orioles.
