“It’s just about being all-around — just being able to play any position,” Shaw stated during Cubs Convention this weekend. “[Hoerner] mentioned how fortunate he was to be able to accomplish it. He was a versatile player who could play outfield, third base, shortstop, second base, and really anyplace.
“You think, ‘Well, it makes sense,’ when you see folks like that who are in the organisation and have had great success. They are looking for a guy just like that. You aspire to be that man.
Shaw, who was drafted with the 13th overall choice in the previous summer’s draft and is ranked No. 7 among the Cubs’ Top 30 prospects by MLB Pipeline, has focused this offseason on improving his defensive versatility. The 22-year-old infielder has chosen to spend the early winter months practicing in the field rather than hitting the field.
Pitching prospects have been moved quickly up the organisational ladder by the Cubs. Jordan Wicks, a lefty, advanced from Double-A to the Chicago rotation the previous season. In ’22, right-winger Javier Assad followed suit.
