It appears like the Chicago Cubs are somewhat busy at the moment.
This offseason, Chicago made headlines when they signed manager Craig Counsell to a massive contract. Since then, the Cubs have been connected to a number of elite free agents, but they haven’t yet made a significant impression.
Aside from signing Counsell, the Cubs are still searching for their first significant splash of the offseason. However, they apparently made a depth move on Tuesday. A post on the 31-year-old’s Instagram page claims that Colten Brewer, a former pitcher for the New York Yankees, has signed with Chicago.

“Excited to be joining the Cubs for the 2024 season,” remarked Brewer. “Grateful that I get to play this game for every second of it. I’m excited to see you guys in Arizona for spring training.”
Brewer has spent two stints with the Yankees, the most recent one ending in 2023. With the Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre RailRiders, he made 15 appearances and tossed 20 innings with a 1.35 ERA.

During the previous season, he played in just three major league games for New York, giving up four earned runs in 8 1/3 innings of relief. Brewer’s first major league experience since 2021 with the Boston Red Sox came with the Yankees during the previous season. From 2019 to 2021, he played for Boston for three seasons.

What function Brewer will have inside the Cubs’ organisation is unknown. Whether Brewer signed a minor league or major league contract was not disclosed. Whether or not he signed a major league contract, it wouldn’t be all that shocking to see him at the major league level at some time in the upcoming season.
