In January, Reading will sign a £150K international contract with League One rivals.
League One strugglers Reading are keen to bolster their squad in January and have set their sights on signing Charlton Athletic defender Terell Thomas, according to a report from Football Insider.
The outlet are claiming that the Royals face stiff competition for the 28-year-old defender from Blackpool, who have also hit a rough patch in recent weeks, dismally losing 3-0 against Port Vale on Friday night to pick up their third defeat in four games.
Meanwhile, Reading have hit a nice patch of form over the past few weeks and have lost just once in their previous eight outings in League One. Additionally, the team are now unbeaten in five consecutive matches as Ruben Selles’ side push for survival in England’s third tier after what has been a torrid season so far on and off the pitch.
What separates the former Premier League outfit from the other relegation contenders is the ability to score goals. The Berkshire club have found the net more times than any other side in the bottom seven. However, Selles’ men also boast the joint-worst defensive record in the league.
As a result, Football Insider are claiming that Reading will look to sign a new centre-back once the January transfer window opens up and are eyeing Charlton’s Terell Thomas.
The St Lucia captain has made 20 appearances this season for the Addicks but has started merely 11 of the side’s 22 league matches under both Dean Holden and Michael Appleton. Now, with his contract set to expire at the end of the 2023/24 season, Charlton could look to move him on in January.
Transfermarkt have placed Thomas’ market value at £150k which could be in Reading’s price range if funds are made available over the coming month.
Thomas can play at both centre-back and at left-back which would offer Selles the ability to tinker with his lineup for certain games, switching from a back four to a back three at times.
Furthermore, this would be an excellent signing as Thomas is a player with a lot of experience in League One which will be necessary to stay in the division as Reading have one of the youngest squads in the division.
