Despite Michigan’s victory in the College Football National Championship, there is still conjecture that head coach Jim Harbaugh will be employed by the NFL in the upcoming season.
However, following the Wolverines’ 34-13 victory over Washington on Monday, supporters believe the former 49ers player has alluded to staying longer with the team.
After nine seasons with Michigan, Harbaugh has an 89-25 record. He is currently leading the Ann Arbour team to their first national championship since 1997.
Given that teams like the Atlanta Falcons, Los Angeles Chargers, Carolina Panthers, and Las Vegas Raiders are all now looking for a new head coach, there have been rumours that he is planning to return to the NFL.
Speaking after he assisted Michigan in winning its 12th national championship, the 60-year-old hinted he may try to replicate the achievement the following season. Some fans of those teams have been extremely outspoken about wanting to hire Harbaugh to turn their fortunes around.
“We love football, so we usually start on Valentine’s Day, February 14,” he remarked when asked when practice will pick back up for the upcoming season. “But we’re going to move it back this year by about a month, which will be good too because Ann Arbour has some nice springtime weather.”
After the video went viral on social media, the question “Did Jim Harbaugh just indirectly announce his plans to stay put at Michigan?” was posted by Barstool Sports’ X (previously Twitter) account.
“He’d be foolish to leave, honestly,” a user remarked.
One more said, “Yeah. Was there ever a question? One person said, “You can’t not try to repeat,” while another said it was “kinda direct.”
However, in what may have been an act of wishful thinking, fans from a number of clubs flooded in, with one exclaiming, “He’s going to the LA Chargers!!!” and another, “Falcons are on the clock.”
According to Bleacher Report sources, Harbaugh and the Raiders have a “mutual interest” in one another, which is the reason for their most recent connection. Following Josh McDaniels’ midseason firing, the AFC West team ended second with an 8-9 record under interim head coach Antonio Pierce.
