A familiar position with the Chicago Cubs will be taken over by a former pitching coach for the Baltimore Orioles.
The Athletic reports that a former pitching coach for the Baltimore Orioles will be joining the Chicago Cubs.
Under new manager Craig Counsell, Darren Holmes, who was the bullpen coach and assistant pitching coach with the Orioles for the previous three seasons, will take over as the Cubs’ bullpen coach.
Holmes was first hired by the Orioles in 2019. After the season, he left the company.
Before the Orioles, Holmes was the Colorado Rockies’ bullpen coaches for five seasons.
Holmes was instrumental in supporting a young pitching staff as it helped the Orioles win 101 games and the American League East in 2023.
Kyle Bradish was named to the Second Team All-MLB and was in fourth in the Cy Young voting. Félix Bautista was the Mariano Rivera Reliever of the Year and an All-MLB First Team member.
In 2024, Dean Kremer, Grayson Rodriguez, Tyler Wells, and John Means will all be added back into the Orioles lineup.
Prior to becoming a coach, Holmes had a successful career as a reliever. He began his career in 1990 with the Los Angeles Dodgers and ended it in 2003 with the Atlanta Braves. He was a pitcher for eight different teams, pitching for the Orioles for a portion of the 2000 season (he also threw for Arizona and St. Louis).
