Have the Maple Leafs been waiting on Rod Brind'Amour all along?

Carolina Hurricanes Coach Rod Brind’Amour Sadly Kicks The Bucket @53 On the newest Daily Faceoff Live, Tyler Yaremchuk and Frank Seravalli talked about the probable changes coming to the Carolina Hurricanes.

Tyler Yaremchuk: The Carolina Hurricanes’ season ends in the second round, despite their efforts to acquire Jake Guentzel. Frank, they’ve advanced to the second round three times and to the conference finals twice in the previous six seasons. They make it to the postseason and win a few games, but they are unable to advance further. What might we expect in North Carolina this summer? A large number of RFAs and UFAs may be seen on their CapFriendly website.

Seth Jarvis and Martin Necas need to be signed. They have Teravainen, Martinook, and Guentzel on the UFA front. It’s DeAngelo, Pesce, Skjei, and Chatfield on the blue line. Don Waddell will have a very busy summer in Carolina.

Seravalli Frank: Carolina is about to undergo a lot of change, and for good reason. You brought up the previous six years and their experiences at that time. The four-most wins in the league during that time span came from those two conference finals and several rounds of victories. Despite being among the most reliable teams in the NHL, they have nothing to show for their efforts. And the reason for that is that I believe their calculus is a little flawed.

Many discussed whether their defensive zone play would be able to compete with those of many teams that have switched to a hybrid zone defense. That might be a minor part of it but also I think for a team that has a method of obtaining players that is better than anyone else in terms of genuinely and effectively targeting players that they believe fit the style they want to play.

Given that the folks they’re bringing in haven’t performed in that regard and that you have an opportunity right now, I believe they need to update or modify their model. It was shrewd, and you had one of the league’s finest defense corps.

However, they must be straightforward and bid Teuvo Teravainen farewell. Given that Jordan Martinook has been a vital member of the team and has contributed to its leadership, it would be wise to try to retain him. It won’t be too expensive for them to bring him back.

In the end, I don’t think Rod Brind’Amour’s current lack of a contract is really significant. I’m sure everything will be completed, however I believe they should consider altering the team’s dynamic and key members. The model hasn’t proven to be effective.
