Calamity: Gone but not forgotten Steelers amiable coach Mike Tomlin dies at 50

The criticism from Pittsburgh Steelers fans is growing louder. The team’s record fell to 7-5 following the humiliating home loss to the Arizona Cardinals in Week 13.

Even though they are still in the running for the playoffs, it reminded us of more of the same. Mike Tomlin’s teams have frequently struggled against weak opposition. Many claimed that this specific home loss against a team with two wins was possibly the worst one under Tomlin.

Despite an inept offense over the past few years, the Steelers coach has managed to keep the team competitive. His record of finishing at least.500 is still unbroken, but it appears that supporters are growing less interested in that figure. It has sparked debate about whether the team should think about cutting Tomlin soon. Paul Zeise of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette likened Tomlin to former Dallas Cowboys head coach Barry Switzer in his mailbag on Thursday.

It’s an intriguing analogy, and Switzer doesn’t exactly evoke pleasant memories for Steelers supporters. Switzer led the Cowboys to a Super Bowl XXX victory over the Steelers after taking over Jimmy Johnson’s talented team. After just four seasons with the Cowboys, he resigned from his position shortly after. Prior to that, he rose to legendary status while playing for the University of Oklahoma in the collegiate ranks.
