Andrew Berry has done a fantastic job of assembling the Cleveland Browns roster since taking over as general manager in 2020. Despite sustained injuries, he was assiduous in making sure every position was competitive, which led to an 11-6 campaign.
Naturally, his major announcements garner the most interest, such as learning that Joe Flacco is still a threat. Frequently, though, it’s the subtle movements that count. It barely created a stir when Maurice Hurst, Shelby Harris, or even Ethan Pocic were added in recent years, but they have all been fantastic additions. Given that, let’s take an early look at five unheralded free agents Berry may want to add to the 53-man roster this season.
The San Francisco 49ers sent DeForest Buckner to the Indianapolis Colts ahead of the 2020 NFL Draft in exchange for a first-round selection. Then, they selected South Carolina defensive tackle Javon Kinlaw with the 14th overall pick.
Although Kinlaw was supposed to replace Buckner, he hasn’t established himself as a full-time starter after four seasons. Nevertheless, with 25 tackles and 3.5 sacks in his most recent season, it was his finest statistical one. He currently has 70 tackles and 5.0 sacks during his career.
It’s a far cry from what was anticipated of him, and there are very few circumstances in which the 49ers should retain him. Rather, he is expected to explore his options on the free market and might be a prospect for a Cleveland one-year contract. Coming over without the expectation of being a team’s top pick could help him settle into a pass-rushing role off the bench. Perhaps a fresh start is just what he needs.
