The baseball world was surprised by a move made by the Chicago Cubs two months ago.
A few days following the 2023 World Series, the Cubs declared their intention to fire manager David Ross and replace him with former Milwaukee Brewers skipper Craig Counsell, who signed a record-breaking $40 million five-year contract.
The Chicago Bears may now have the chance to improve at head coach in a manner akin to this.
Matt Eberflus was appointed head coach of the Bears two years ago. Whether Eberflus returns for a third season is still up in the air following two consecutive losing campaigns.
Head coach of the Michigan Wolverines Jim Harbaugh has stayed at his alma institution after teasing a return to the NFL in recent years. On Monday night in Houston, his Wolverines will compete for the National Championship against the Washington Huskies.
If Michigan prevails, Harbaugh would have fulfilled his goals since taking over as head coach of the Wolverines in 2014.
Chicago is already a part of Harbaugh’s life. From 1987 until 1993, he spent seven seasons as the Bears’ quarterback. Harbaugh has always supported the Cubs. In 2016, he threw out the opening pitch during a game at Wrigley Field. Later that autumn, he was spotted watching Cubs World Series games from the stands.
A move from Eberflus to Harbaugh would be similar to the Cubs’ trade of Counsell for Ross. Since Cubs owner Tom Ricketts gave Ross a vote of confidence in October, Ross believed he would be managing the Chicago for a fifth season in 2024.
According to Ricketts, “I think Ross had a great season, and the players played hard for him,” in October, he told reporters. “He is our man. I think he had a good year and I really like him. He didn’t let it go when the club fell far below.500 and it appeared that the season was finished. The boys are back on the field thanks to him. We arrived at this location. He had a significant role in it. I believe he is an excellent manager.”
