This weekend in Chicago, Pete Crow-Armstrong, the rookie outfielder for the Chicago Cubs and the team’s top prospect, is getting a taste of the Cubs Convention.
As Crow-Armstrong flaunts his new hairstyle and mingles with Cubs supporters over the weekend, he took some time to consider his few games played in the Majors the previous season and, most significantly, his chance to play in the legendary Wrigley Field.
The Cubs’ 1912 house is “loud and beautiful and picturesque,” according to Crow-Armstrong. “It’s unmatched, like a scene from a movie.”
In the home, the term “movie scene” is appropriate. Crow-Armstrong’s mother Ashley is well-known to baseball fans as Jenny Heywood from the 1994 film “Little Big League.” Both of Crow-Armstrong’s parents are actors. She is most recognised to lovers of science fiction as Sandra Bennet from the television series “Heroes,” where she plays the mother of Claire Bennet, portrayed by Hayden Panettiere, one of the major protagonists.
In September of last year, Crow-Armstrong made his Major League Baseball debut, primarily as a late defensive replacement, and he showed off the glove that won him the Minor League Gold Glove for 2022. Although he was unable to demonstrate the bat, he spent the entire month making notes.
He referred to the event as a “checkpoint” in his professional life.
He answered, “I guess that’s the cookie-cutter answer, but it was all I ever wanted.” However, since I simply went and played 12 more baseball games at the end of the day, I’m viewing it more as a checkpoint than a significant event. All in all, I believe that the people I was and am still surrounded by are what motivate me to stay up there. Furthermore, I believe that I carried over a lot of my excitement from last year into this one.
In the minor leagues last year, Armstrong advanced significantly at the plate.
With the Double-A Tennessee Smokies and the Triple-A Iowa Cubs last season he hit .283/.365/.511/.876 with 26 doubles, seven triples, 20 home runs and 82 RBI. In addition, he took 37 bases.
He has been mentioned as a contender for NL Rookie of the Year thus far this offseason, and MLB execs have said that he has the best fielding of any prospect in the game. At Spring Training, he could be able to make the Opening-Day roster.
Over the weekend, the Cubs held their yearly “Cubs Convention,” sometimes referred to as “Cubs Con.” Fans in attendance decided to send a clear statement as chairman and team owner Tom Ricketts (together with his siblings) began the festivities with a speech. They started yelling for Cody Bellinger, the outfielder, loudly.
