In 2002, Pat Mahomes, the father of Kansas City Chiefs player Patrick Mahomes, played with the Chicago Cubs for a single season. Over the course of his 11-year big-league career, the right-handed reliever recorded a 5.47 ERA with 452 strikeouts in 709 innings worked.

Early exposure to a professional helped shape Patrick into the football player he is today. Now that he has an opportunity to win his third Super Bowl, he is without a doubt the best quarterback in the NFL.

Although it won’t be simple, Mahomes has more than enough ability to do the assignment, as demonstrated throughout his NFL career. The Chiefs had a disappointing season by their standards, yet they still advanced to the Super Bowl against the doubts of many.

His father stated after their win against the Baltimore Ravens in the AFC Championship, telling Harold R. Kuntz of FOX4 how proud he was.

According to Perfect Game, the 2014 high school graduate was ranked No. 389 among players in his grade. The Detroit Tigers selected him in the 37th round of the MLB Draft.

Considering his success in the NFL, it’s safe to say that he made the right choice.

Mahomes is in the running to be the greatest quarterback of all time after winning another Super Bowl. On February 11, 2024, he has the opportunity to achieve just that against the San Francisco 49ers.

I won’t spend too much time laying out the background for the numerous words that follow, but I’ll highlight two noteworthy themes right away:

First, all of the industry people I spoke with agreed that there was a significant and unusual decline in the list’s vicinity of Nos. 40 to 50, which is why I placed the 50/55 Future Value (FV) break there. I usually have a strong group of players at the bottom of my lists that my sources support, but this time around no one really did that, so I ended up adding more guys from the deep 2023 draft than I had anticipated.

The second pattern is the high proportion of players on the list who were selected recently. What causes that decline in the midst of the rankings? No one was certain. Perhaps teams are promoting players to the major leagues at an accelerated rate, leaving a short-term void in their wake? Perhaps skill is cyclical, and following one of the strongest draft classes in history—possibly the greatest in a few decades—this is the quiet before the storm, with a number of those guys moving up the ranks together after having full seasons to establish themselves. I was quite aggressive with 2023 draftees coming off excellent debuts, anticipating that to be the case.

Click here for a brief summary of other important terminology used in the ranking as well as the tool grades on the 20–80 scale that are used extensively throughout this list and are the industry standard in baseball. We begin our coverage of 2023’s top prospects with today’s list. On Friday, we will rank every MLB farm system, and the following week, we will release our team-by-team prospect lists for both leagues.
