Detroit Tigers vs Atlanta Braves Picks & Prediction - 6/18/24

Atlanta Braves vs Detroit Tigers Game Scheduled For 22 June Postponed Due To The Atlanta Braves are looking to capitalize on their rare close victory from Monday night by defeating the Detroit Tigers today in order to maintain the good times and guarantee themselves a series victory.

Reese Olson ended a bad run of starts with a decisive six-inning shutout Friday night, proving that his recent form meant very little. As he gets the start tonight for Detroit, Casey Mize will be looking to replicate that kind of performance on the mound. In four of his last five appearances, Mize has allowed at least three runs; his most recent start, however, was an exception, as he lasted six innings and only gave up.

That was actually Mize’s third start of the season in which he pitched at least six innings and allowed just one run or fewer. Mize has had his fair number of appearances in which he looked like a very good pitcher, but after a run of appearances like to the one he broke lately, you’ll start to question if he really has anything going on.

The Braves will undoubtedly be hoping that Mize shows up to Cobb County this evening with the same version of himself that has seen his four-seam fastball hammered for a.307 batting average against and a.430 slugging percentage against.

Meanwhile, the Braves are giving Spencer Schwellenbach another chance to prove his mettle in the major leagues. Schwellenbach had made two starts for the big league team and had shown signs of promise, but in his most recent appearance, he finally came together for a strong start. Being a rookie in MLB and pitching six innings against any team is impressive enough, but pitching against the Orioles and only allowing two runs in those six innings was even more remarkable.

Spencer Schwellenbach should also benefit from the fact that this Tigers squad hasn’t exactly been dominating at the plate in June. Although Atlanta’s offensive problems have been extensively covered on this website and the Braves’ section of the internet, at least there are indications that things may be improving recently. In contrast, Detroit has only managed three runs or less in eight of its fifteen games this month. In June, the Tigers are also hitting.220/.282/.356 as a team, with a.282 team wOBA and an 82 team wRC+. To put things in perspective, the Braves have been hitting.
