After losing 1-0 at St. James’ Park to Newcastle United three months prior, Martin Odegaard said Arsenal had “extra motivation” to play against them.
After three VAR reviews of Anthony Gordon’s winning goal, Gunners manager Mikel Arteta was left furious in November. However, his team exacted revenge at the Emirates on Saturday night.
“It gave us the extra motivation today [losing to Porto midweek] also what happened against Newcastle last time [1-0 loss at St. James Park] gave us that extra motivation,” Odegaard stated. “Our only goals in coming here were to play well and entertain the spectators.
Declan Rice and Jorginho were adept at reading between the lines, and it made all the difference today as we were very aggressive.
“Our goal is to constantly create and play in the closing third of the game. I have been playing a little higher up since we have been playing in a few different ways, and Declan and Jorginho have also been dropping a bit more.”
